“…Cosmogenic nuclide (CN) surface exposure dating has also been implemented to determine the emplacement time for boulders entrenched within hillslope sediments (e.g. Cordes et al ., ; Mackey and Quigley, ; Rinat et al ., ; Stock et al ., ,b) and estimate production rates and residence times of colluvial hillslope soils (e.g. Heimsath et al ., ).…”

“…Fattahi et al, 2006). Additionally, hillslope sediment chronologies have been used to determine the timing of mass wasting events, such as landslides and rockfalls (Becker and Davenport, 2003;Matmon et al, 2005;Kanari, 2008;Chapot et al, 2012;Mackey and Quigley, 2014;Rinat et al, 2014).…”

“…The measurement of cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in minerals exposed at or near Earth's surface has been used to estimate the age of paleorockfalls over 10 3 to 10 4 yr time scales (e.g., Matmon et al, 2005;Cordes et al, 2013;Rinat et al, 2014). This study is the first we know of to date paleorockfalls using cosmogenic 3 He, a nuclide produced and retained in a variety of minerals, including clinopyroxene (augite) (Gosse and Phillips, 2001).…”

“…Cosmogenic exposure measurements within the crack represent an extreme example of topographic shielding (Dunne and Elmore, 2003), with as much as 60% of cosmogenic rays blocked compared to an unobstructed surface sample. Studies have questioned whether conventional shielding calculations, designed for distant skyline geometry, are appropriate for these extreme cases (e.g., Matmon et al, 2005;Balco et al, 2008;Rinat et al, 2014). We do not account for effects where the incoming cosmic ray fl ux may not be fully blocked, such as where the upper corner of shielding cliffs has a length scale comparable to the attenuation length of cosmic rays in rock.…”
