Holo3DGIS: Leveraging Microsoft HoloLens in 3D Geographic Information

Abstract: Three-dimensional geographic information systems (3D GIS) attempt to understand and express the real world from the perspective of 3D space. Currently, 3D GIS perspective carriers are mainly 2D and not 3D, which influences how 3D information is expressed and further affects the user cognition and understanding of 3D information. Using mixed reality as a carrier of 3D GIS is promising and may overcome problems when using 2D perspective carriers in 3D GIS. The objective of this paper is to propose an architectur… Show more

“…However, many users have complained about the limitations of the HoloLens' FOV causing the disappearance of displayed content from the interface. This issue was particularly prevalent during the creation of the Heritage Building Information Modelling project (Fonnet, Alves, Sousa, Guevara, & Magalhães, 2017) and the Holo3DGIS application that suggests a similar development issue with the inability to display full user content further supports this problem (Wang, Wu, Chen, & Chen, 2018). Therefore, designing a customised UI for HoloLens applications is a viable solution for enhancing UX.…”

“…Since the workload has been reduced it just displays, captures, and transmits information interactively which includes gestures alongside voice. The Geographical Information System (GIS) [18] collects information from the environment in real-time. The holographic remote player adjusts the field of view accordingly depending on the scenes either large or small.…”

“…To investigate possible effects for the perception of spatial information, new methodological challenges occur. The possibility to implement spatial models in AR applications has already been investigated and described (Wang et al, 2018). However, to take full advantage of the possibilities of AR for geospatial applications, technical limitations of the current available AR devices must be faced.…”
