Abstract: Thomas Hobbes has recently been cast as one of the forefathers of political realism. This article evaluates his place in the realist tradition by focusing on three key themes: the priority of legitimacy over justice, the relation between ethics and politics, and the place of imagination in politics. The thread uniting these themes is the importance Hobbes placed on achieving a moral consensus around peaceful coexistence, a point which distances him from realists who view the two as competing goals of politics.… Show more

“…The ideas of human existence being evil or 'men are evil' emerge from this. Not all omnium contra omens or war of all against all becomes something that cannot be avoided (Douglass, 2020;Fischer, 2012). However, Hobbes still views that humans will always try to want peace by forming a commonwealth (Cozzaglio & Greene, 2019;Douglass, 2020;Fischer, 2012;Malcolm, 2005;Moloney, 2011;Murphy, 2013;Polansky, 2016;Thivet, 2008;Yurdusev, 2006).…”

“…‘Governance’ implies an unauthorizable hierarchy, which however cannot be unconditional; ‘power’ takes absolutely equal and free subjects as a premise and draws absolute authority as a conclusion. Finally, unjust ‘governance’ can be judged and resisted, while ‘power’ is formally irresistible and irrevocable (see Douglass 2016). Hobbes’s sovereign person is just by definition, no matter what it does, because it formally expresses the citizens’ command as the bedrock of politics.…”

“…The various meanings are not entirely unconnected, but their relationship is complicated. While it is common to cite realist classics in contemporary realist theory and there are some articles arguing that other classical authors should be added to the realist canon (e. g. Schlosser, 2014), this practice is not without difficulties (Douglass, 2020;McQueen, 2017). There are also arguments put forward for involving realist international political theory in contemporary realist theory (Sleat, 2013: 12-14).…”
