HLA-DRB1* alleles in Egyptian children with post-streptococcal acute glomerulonephritis

Abstract: To investigate the association between HLA-DRB1* alleles and post-streptococcal acute glomerulonephritis (PSAGN) in Egyptian children, 32 unrelated patients with PSAGN and 380 healthy individuals from the same locality were typed for DRB1* alleles using the polymerase chain-reverse hybridization technique. Patients with PSAGN had significantly increased frequency of both DRB1* 03011 (46.9 vs. 19.2% in controls, P=0.00025) and DRB1* 1105 (31.1 vs. 15.6% in controls, P=0.0097) alleles. However, after correction … Show more

“…Increased frequencies of HLA-DRW4 [48] and HLA-DRB1*0311 [49] were reported in Venezuelan and Egyptian cohorts with PSGN compared to healthy controls. In a Turkish study, children with homozygote 'a' alleles, or heterozygote 'a'/'b' alleles, of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene intron 4 a/b (eNOS4a/b) variable number of tandem repeats polymorphism, had a greater risk for PSGN than those carrying homozygote 'b' alleles, suggesting a role for eNOSa in PSGN [50].…”

“…Layrisse et al [23] reported an increased frequency of HLA-DRW4 in 42 unrelated APSGN patients compared with 109 healthy controls. More recently, in a study of Egyptian children [24 ], HLA-DRB1Ã03011 was reported to be found at a significantly higher frequency in 32 unrelated APSGN patients compared with 380 healthy individuals (46.9 versus 19.2%), although there was no correlation between the frequency of the allele and hypertension and proteinuria. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene intron 4 a/b (eNOS4a/b) variable number of tandem repeats polymorphism was also found to be associated with susceptibility to APSGN.…”

“…A recent study found a significantly higher frequency of HLA-DRB1*03011 allele in Egyptian children with PSGN compared with controls. 115 Other studies found an association with HLA-DPA1*01, DPA1*0201, 116 and HLA-DRW4. 117 A defect in the regulating mechanisms of the alternative pathway of complement has been suggested for patients with persistent IRGN.…”
