Abstract: The frequencies of HLA‐A and ‐B locus antigens in a group of 64 individuals from Iraq are reported. The frequencies are in broad agreement with those previously reported for Arabs, but show differences from Persian frequencies.

“…, North Africans, sub-Saharans, Caucasian populations, and Saudi Arabians(24). The B*44 allele group (B*4402 af = 0.03; B*440301 af = 0.07) and the B*4501 (af = 0.068), B*0801 (af = 0.061) alleles also occurred frequently in the CH group, as reported also for other Moroccan populations.Comparing the frequencies of B*51, B*58, and B*35 allele groups with other populations, we found a low incidence of B*510101 (af = 0.041) in CH, as observed also in ME, in comparison with Moroccans from Casablanca and ElJ, other North African and Mediterranean populations.…”

“…As observed with HLA‐A locus, there were many HLA‐B variants in this population. Out of 42 allelic variants, the most frequently identified belongs to B*50 group (B*5001 af = 0.110; B*5002 af = 0.014), with a higher incidence in comparison with other Moroccans, except for Morocco Casablanca (7), North Africans, sub‐Saharans, Caucasian populations, and Saudi Arabians (24). “…Lebanese residents in Sidney (Bashir et al 1973). Iraquis (Jabbar & Dick 1976) and Egyptians (El Sawy et al 1984). Among the antigens frequent in all the Arab populations we can mention HLA, A9, A28, Awl9 and Bw21.…”

“…Comparisons of the HLA antigen frequencies in Saudi Arabs with other Arab populations are also summarized in Table 3. These comparisons are limited to studies of Moslem Arabs resident in Israel (Bodmer et al 1972), Iraqis (Jabbar & Dick 1976), expatriate Lebanese resident in Sydney, Australia (Bashir et al 1973) and different religious groups in the Lebanon (Serre et al 1979). The Lebanese in Bashir's study were all Christians and therefore might possibly not be a true representation of the whole population.…”
