HIV Type 1 Subtypes Based on the pol Gene and Drug Resistance Mutations Among Antiretroviral-Naive Patients from Guangxi, Southern China

Abstract: We investigated the distribution of HIV-1 subtypes and the prevalence of HIV-1 drug resistance among HIV-infected antiretroviral-naive patients in Guangxi, southern China. A total of 144 subjects from Liuzhou or Nanning, two cities having the most HIV-infected cases in Guangxi, were enrolled. HIV-1 pol fragments were amplified and sequenced from plasma of all patients. In all, 124 sequences were obtained, with 67 from Liuzhou and 57 from Nanning. All sequences were subtyped by phylogenetic analysis and analyze… Show more

“…This conclusion is placed in the WHO range that reports the prevalence of moderate drug resistance between 5 and 15% [9,21]. In the current study, no drug resistance mutations were assessed in the NNRTI class among naïve patients; there is a concordance between this result and 2 previous studies [10,22]. However, the result is inconsistent with other studies reporting NNRTI mutations in naïve patients [1,23].…”

“…Clearly, the number of individuals who had received free ART dramatically increased from since June 2010 under the 5 years anti-HIV programme run by the Guangxi Government, China. In 2008, Su et al [15] analysed 124 HIV-infected, ARV-naive patients enrolled from Liuzhou and Nanning, Guangxi. The results showed that the prevalence of transmitted HIV drug resistance was 1.6%.…”

“…Our study shows that the prevalence of TDR in Guangxi is 3.2%. Furthermore, Su et al [15] did not find TDR in NNRTI. Mutations of this type were seen our in study and that of Li et al [16] with a prevalence of 1.9 and 0.5%, respectively.…”

“…CRF01_AE and CRF08_BC were two major subtypes in Guangxi. 6 Reports in recent years in Guangxi showed that CRF01_AE had dominated in the central city Nanning and the eastern city Liuzhou, 7 and there may be more than one introduction of CRF01_AE in Guangxi. 8 To gain a deeper understanding on the evolution of the HIV-1 epidemic and genetic characterization of CRF01_AE in Guangxi, we recruited 349 HIV/AIDS patients from cities all over Guangxi.…”
