“…This was evident from the decrease in the sperm count, sperm motility and an increase in abnormal forms with the use of TDF/FTC/EFV combination. This is in tandem with the findings of earlier studies (Azu et al, ; Kehl et al, ; Ogedengbe et al, ) who also reported semen abnormalities. The effect on sperm parameters could explain the lesser number of pregnancies and subsequently pubs in the rats on TDF/FTC/EFV combination.…”

“…Abnormalities are correlated with lower CD4+ cell counts and may include lower sperm volume, concentration, and motility along with higher rate of abnormal forms [98, 99]. Some data suggest that ARV therapy may have an adverse effect on semen quality: a longitudinal study of 34 men with serial semen analyses prior to ARV therapy and up to 48 weeks post-ARV initiation found that the proportion of progressively motile spermatozoa was low at all time points, but decreased significantly over the course of followup [100].…”

“…Chronic illnesses such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes mellitus and hypertension are associated with compromised erectile function and reduced fertility due to vascular damage, oxidative stress and atherosclerosis (Kehl et al., ; Selvin, Burnett, & Platz, ; Zona et al., ). Self‐medication with H. hemerocallidea for chronic illnesses and reproductive ailments is very common in South Africa (Appelbaum et al., ; Liwa et al., ; Mills, Cooper, Seely, & Kanfer, ).…”
