HIV epidemics in Shenzhen and Chongqing, China

Abstract: ObjectiveMen who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexuals are the populations with the fastest growing HIV infection rates in China. We characterize the epidemic growth and age patterns between these two routes from 2004 to 2015 in Chongqing and Shenzhen, China.Design and methodsData were downloaded from the National HIV/ AIDS Comprehensive Response Information Management System. For the new HIV diagnoses of heterosexuals and MSM in both cities, we estimated the growth rates by fitting different sub-exponenti… Show more

“…In contrast, it is notable that the HCV incidence among blood donors in Chongqing was higher than that reported for the general population (21.25 vs. 12.42). In addition to likely underreporting of the general population incidence rate, Chongqing, as China's largest municipality, is a major hotspot for injection drug users (IDUs) and men who have sex with men (MSM) . IDU and MSM are important routes of HCV transmission .…”

“…China experienced a growing epidemic of HIV/AIDS over the time span covered by the analysis. Considering the pervasive variation of HIV transmission type across regions 25 , the rising trend of HIV/AIDS may imply the increasing dominance of one or more types of HIV transmission channels. However, the increase of HIV/AIDS incidence does not necessarily indicate the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS through actual virus transmission.…”

“…These cities represent developed areas; however, data on undeveloped southwest China, with low income and educational levels (which can be important predictors of STIs), have been largely ignored. Chongqing is one of the four municipalities under the direct control of the central government of China and serves as the economic and political center of southwest China, which has made Chongqing a magnet for migrant workers [27,28]. The average annual rate for new HIV infections in Chongqing from 2007 to 2012 was 19.7%, which greatly exceeded the national infection rate (3.13%) [29].…”
