HIV-2 CRF01_AB: First Circulating Recombinant Form of HIV-2

Abstract: We recently identified HIV-2 CRF01_AB cases in Japan. This ectopic observation of the virus outside its original endemic area suggests an ongoing global spread of HIV-2 CRF01_AB.

“…7 In HIV-2-infected individuals the presence of a circulating recombinant form (CRF), 01_AB, has been detected. 8,9 In Cuba, from 1986 to December 2013, a total of 20 individuals were serologically confirmed as positive for antibodies to HIV-2 in the AIDS Research Laboratory (National Reference Laboratory for Human Retroviruses). 10,11 However, there are no reports available about HIV -2 groups circulating in the Cuban population.…”

“…HIV-2 is divided into 8 groups (A-H) (5-8); among these, groups A and B are epidemic, while cases of the other HIV-2 groups are rare (8,9). The recombinant HIV-2 CRF01_AB was recently identified (10).…”

“…HIV-2 infections are mainly confined to regions of West Africa where an estimated 1-2 million people are infected [1], [2]. However, infections have also been identified in Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and the United States [3], [4], [5]. The virus is characterized by a high degree of genetic diversity and has been classified into at least eight groups, A and B being the most common [6], [7].…”
