HIV-1 Genetic Diversity and Its Impact on Baseline CD4+T Cells and Viral Loads among Recently Infected Men Who Have Sex with Men in Shanghai, China

Abstract: The HIV-1 epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM) has been spreading throughout China. Shanghai, a central gathering place for MSM, is facing a continuously increasing incidence of HIV-1 infection. In order to better understand the dynamics of HIV-1 diversity and its influence on patient’s immune status at baseline on diagnosis, 1265 newly HIV-1-infected MSM collected from January 2009 to December 2013 in Shanghai were retrospectively analyzed for genetic subtyping, CD4+T cell counts, and viral loads. “…CRF01_AE infection constitutes a widespread epidemic in Southeast Asia and Central and West Africa, and accounts for 5% of the total HIV‐1 infection worldwide. Our results and those of previous studies illustrate the accelerated pathogenesis of CRF01_AE . In Thailand, CRF01_AE infection has been shown to progress rapidly to death .…”

“…For instance, about half of the subtypes were identified as CRF08_BC (47.4%) among the recently infected population in Yunnan [20] and CRF07_BC was the predominant strain in Xinjiang Province [21]. However, CRF01_AE was dominant in east China [22,23]. It has been confirmed that one of the drug-trafficking routes in mainland China is from Yunnan to Sichuan and then to Xinjiang [24].…”

“…While illegal and unsanitary blood collection practices have been significantly reduced [35], the number of individuals infected with HIV through heterosexual contact and MSM has dramatically increased [36, 37]. Guangxi has also undergone a similar transmission route shift as well, where heterosexual contact has replaced IDU as the dominant route and accounted for >80% of newly diagnosed HIV-infected individuals in 2009.…”
