Black carbon (BC), ubiquitous in soils, plays an important role in global carbon cycles, the radiative heat balance of the Earth, pollutant fate, emissions of greenhouse gas, soil fertility, soil microbial community, and ecosystem stability. However, information on BC in topsoils of the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is limited. Therefore, this study performed field sampling and analyzed contents of total BC and soot BC in topsoils. The results indicated that the contents of total BC in all soil samples ranged from 0.504 to 74.381 g kg −1 with an average value of 5.152 g kg −1 , whereas those of soot BC were in the range of 0.400-15.200 g kg −1 with a mean value of 1.719 g kg −1 . Contents of BC were significantly correlated with those of total carbon and total organic carbon. Soil types affected the distribution of soil BC. The contents of total BC in the loam soils were larger than those in the clay soils, whereas soot BC was more easily enriched in the clay soils. Total BC was negatively correlated with Ca, and soot BC was negatively correlated with Ti. The contents of soil BC in functional areas, such as agricultural and pastoral areas, industrial areas, and mining areas, were significantly higher than those in other areas, illustrating that anthropogenic activities drastically affected the distribution of soil BC. Black carbon (BC) is an important inert carbon component in the cycling process of surface carbon. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a kind of thick cyclic organic compounds with carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic effects. The incomplete burning process of biomass and carbolic fuel is the important source of their co-occurrence. This study collected a 60-cm peat core from the Jiadengyu (JDY), Altay Mountain. The core was dated using the 210Pb and 137Cs methods. The results showed BC, total organic carbon, and PAHs of the JDY peat core to be 1.14–72.6 mg g−1, 17.09–47.2%, and 260.58–1,610.77 ng·g−1, respectively. δ13CBC was between −31.5 and − 29.4‰ (mean of −30.56‰). The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated irregular or lumpy peat BC particles, retaining a plant fiber structure. δ13CBC, ratios of PAHs, and the SEM revealed that the BC to be the dominant source of biomass combustion in the peatland. BC showed an increasing trend between 1950 and 1980, after which it decreased. The discrepancy between the change in BC and δ13CBC from the national pattern of BC emission likely reflects the effect of local agricultural exploration, and thus an increase in crop burning.

Black carbon (BC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are often used to indicate anthropogenic impacts on natural environmental changes during the past century. In this study, a 30 cm peat core was collected from the Jiadengyu (JDY) peatland in Altay Mountain and dated by the 137Cs and 210Pb methods. The total organic carbon, BC and PAHs contents in JDY peat core were 17.09-47.16%, 1.14-67.14 mg g-1 and 260.58-950.98 ng·g-1, respectively. The δ13CBC ranged from -31.5‰ to -27.43‰, with an average of -30.52‰. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that the BC particles in the peat were lumpy or irregular in shape and retained the structure of plant fiber. The PAHs ratios, δ13CBC and the SEM result indicated the dominant biomass combustion source of BC in the peatland. The BC content increased from 1950 to 1980 and decreased after 1980. The change of BC and δ13CBC is different from the national BC emission pattern, probably reflecting the impact of local agricultural exploration and thus crop burning increase.
