Historical and Geomorphological Characterization of a Brazilian Karst Region

Abstract: Izvleček UDK 551.44(81) Luiz Eduardo Panisset Travassos & Heinz Charles Kohler: Zgodovinske in geomorfološke značilnosti kraškega področja Cordisburgo (Minas Gerais, Brazilija) Namen dela je predstaviti geografske značilnosti kraškega področja Cordisburga na podoben način, kot je predstavljen klasični kras, a prirejen za tropski kras. Show more

“…In geological terms, the investigated area is part of the geotectonic unit of the São Francisco Supergroup and the Bambuí Group, composed of rock compartments of several ages. The sedimentation of carbonates occurred from 900 to 600 million years ago, in an epicontinental sea of shallow waters in the irregular and impermeable crystalline base that allowed the development of the Brazilian carbonate platform (Auler 1994;Piló 1998;Alkmim & Martins-Neto 2001;Travassos & Kohler 2009). The units of the Bambuí Group cover approximately the extension of the current basin of the São Francisco River and, according to Piló and Rubbioli (2002), the region is developed in the São Francisco Karst Plateau located between the altitudes of 750 to 500 m.…”

“…In geomorphological mapping, karst environments are commonly studied, for example, Sallum and Karmann (2007), Graciotti, Pantaloni, and Foresi (2008), Galve et al (2009), Huang and Cai (2009), López-Vicente, Navas, and Machín (2009), Siart, Bubenzer, and Eitel (2009), Travassos and Kohler (2009), Fonseca (2011), Gutiérrez et al (2011), Perego, Zerboni, and Cremaschi (2011), and Annys et al (2014). Karst relief commonly develops in biogenic, biochemical, and chemical sedimentary rocks, mainly in carbonate rocks such as limestone and dolomite (De Waele, Plan, & Audra, 2009;Groves & Meiman, 2005;Johnson & Stieglitz, 1990).…”
