“…W herever a tte m p ts have been m ade, the iden tification appears to be ra th e r dubious. Study of the biological cycle and experim ental studies have helped in identifying the gonadotrops [Atz, 1953: O livereau andH erlant, 1960;Stahl el al., 1960;Stahl, 1963: Olivereau andBall 1964;Rai, 1966a, b ;O livereau, 1967). The occurrence of two categories of gonadotrops; F SH and L H -secreting cyanophils have earlier been reported in A nguilla males whose gonads were activ ated by prolan injection [Olivereau and Herlant,I960] However, in a recent publication O livereau 119671 concurs with R ai's observations [ 1966a, b| and points out the difficulty in se p a ra t ing tw o types of gonadotrops in the fem ale Anguilla whose separation into FSH and LH -secreting cells has earlier been reported in male Anguilla [Olivereau and H erlant,I960], It is interesting to record here th a t only a single purified gonadotropic factor has been obtained from G yprinus carpio p itu ita ry [B urzawa and Fontaine, 1965].…”
