Histopathology of Granulosis Viruses in Insects

Abstract: A histopathological study of granulosis virus diseases of the spruce budworm, Choristonezira fumiferana Clem., the larch budworm, Eucosnta griseana Hbn.,and the imported cabbage worm, Pieris rapae Linn., has shown that the viruses may infect fat, hypodermal, tracheal matrix, and blood cells. The viruses multiply and develop within the cytoplasm of these cells appearing first as spheres and then as rods. Finally each rod becomes occluded by protein to form a "granule". 1bIanuscri~t received F e b r~~a r v 24. 1… Show more

“…Availability of the electron microscope facilitated discovery and characterisation of occluded viruses from a variety of forest insect species (Table 1). Characterisation initially focussed on virus ultrastructure and biochemistry (Bergold 1953(Bergold , 1963 and cellular biology of host response and infection processes (Bird 1952(Bird , 1957(Bird , 1958. Early forays into the biochemistry of viral nucleic acids (Wyatt 1952) led to a citation by Watson and Crick in their landmark paper on the double helix structure of DNA.…”

“…The polyhedroses comprise two main groups, the nuclear and rhc cytoplasmic diseases. Members of both of these groups have been studied in Canada, as have the granuloses which have only a single virus particle occluded in each discrete body (Bird 1958(Bird , 1959Bird and Whalen 1954a, b;Iiuger 1963;Smith 1963).…”
