Histopathological Spectrum pf Ovarian Neoplasms in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Abstract: Introduction:Ovarian cancer accounts for about 3% of all cancers in women and is one of the leading causes of mortality among all cancers of female genital tract. Incidence rate was 10.2/100,000 females in India in 2013. Study aimed to record the histopathological spectrum of ovarian neoplasms over a period of 1 year in a tertiary care hospital. Material and methods:This retrospective study was done for a period of 1 year (. Here we studied 70 cases of ovarian mass specimen received and fixed in 10%formalin. 4… Show more

“…They represent the sixth most common female cancer and the fourth leading cause of death due to cancers in women [2,9] . Repeated ovulatory rupture and repair theoretically creates opportunities for malignant gene mutations and might explain the apparent protective effect of oral contraceptives, late menarche, early menopause, multiparity and breast feeding [10] . Though no age group is free from the tumours, different tumours tend to involve different age groups preferentially.…”

“…Though no age group is free from the tumours, different tumours tend to involve different age groups preferentially. The complex anatomy of the ovary and its peculiar physiology with the constant cyclical changes from puberty to menopause give rise to number of cell types which is capable of giving rise to tumours [10] . Nulliparity, family history and genetic mutations are some of the known risk factors associated with the development of ovarian neoplasms.…”

“…Ovarian neoplasms (ONs) comprise 3% of all cancers [ 1 , 2 ], and among female genital tract-related malignancies, the incidence is 25% [ 3 , 4 ]. Ovarian cancer is the fifth most prevalent cancer overall and the second most common gynecological cancer [ 3 , 5 ]. Non-Hispanic whites (11.6 per 100,000) have the highest rate of ONs, followed by the second highest frequency in American Indians and Alaska Natives (10.3 per 100,000), Hispanics (10.1 per 100,000), non-Hispanic blacks, and Asian and Pacific Islanders [ 6 ].…”

“…An ovarian neoplasm causes mass in the abdomen, pain, and abdominal distension in many cases and hence presents as a silent killer. Due to monthly endocrine and traumatic insults during ovulatory cycles, the ovaries have become susceptible to tumor genesis [ 3 ].…”

“…In 2018, ovarian carcinoma ranked as the eighth most common cancer diagnosed and cause of cancer death in women, with an estimated 295,000 cases and 184,000 deaths worldwide. According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) 2018, the age-standardized incidence rate for India is 3.8-5.5 cases per 100,000 females per year [ 2 ], whereas this was 10.2/100,000 females in India in 2013 [ 3 ]. The observed decline was mainly attributed to the use of oral contraceptives, which have long-lasting protective effects against ovarian cancer after several years of use.…”
