Histopathological case report of high grade salivary duct carcinoma

Abstract: The case of a 39-year-old man with slowly growing mass in the superior part of left parotid region is described. Patient presented neurological symptoms including hypomobility of lower left eyelid and inability of complete closure of left side eyelids resulting in conjunctivitis and hyperlacrimation. Routine physical examination supported by image and laboratory tests was performed. Pathomorphological results of hematoxylin and eosin staining as well immunohistochemical examination in view of clinical presenta… Show more

“…13 Patients with SDC present with a nodular, grey-white, illdefined, firm, and painless parotid mass with cervical lymphadenopathy. [14][15][16] At the time of diagnosis, 66.0% (93 patients) of patients with SDC have a stage T3/T4 disease, and 50.4% (71 patients) have positive lymph nodes. 13,14 Microscopically, SDC shows a high-grade adenocarcinoma that bears resemblance to mammary ductal carcinoma and ductal carcinoma in situ with solid, papillary, micropapillary, cribriform growth patterns, and intraductal comedo-type necrosis ( Figure 2).…”

“…Rare morphologic variations, such as the presence of mucin-rich, sarcomatoid, and micropapillary carcinoma, have also been reported. [14][15][16] The most commonly used immunomarkers for various components of the normal salivary gland are summarized in Table 1. Salivary duct carcinoma is positive for AE1/ AE3 and EMA; strongly and diffusely positive for CK7, GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3), and GCDFP-15; but negative for CK20, mucin 4, S100, SMA, and calponin.…”

“…Access to care is organized through regional reference centers for malignant tumors of salivary gland, sinusonasal tract, ear, as well as for nonsquamous cell carcinoma tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Salivary duct carcinoma is an aggressive neoplasm. Tumor samples are collected in regional tumor banks.…”

“…[5][6][7] This neoplasm occurs typically in men during the sixth decade of life [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] and its main location is the parotid gland. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Salivary duct carcinoma is an aggressive neoplasm. Regional lymph node metastases are frequent at the time of diagnosis, in 54%-82% of the cases according to the previous studies.…”
