Histopathological and Immunohistochemical Findings in Congenital Pouch Colon: A Prospective Study

Abstract: Background: There is a paucity of literature on the histopathological aspects of congenital pouch colon (CPC) and immunohistochemical (IHC) assessment has not been reported. So we planned to study the histopathological and IHC findings within the spectrum of CPC and compare the findings with the normal colon. Methods: This is a descriptive prospective study on CPC patients. There were 49 cases of CPC (42 males and 7 females) and 13 controls. Histological examination was done using hematoxylin and eosin and Mas… Show more

“…However, chemotherapy is often indiscriminate, with many off-targeted toxic effects and is typically only used to treat colon cancers in the early stages of the disease. During this period, cancer cells often acquire drug resistance due to increased exposure to stressful conditions and cytotoxic drugs ( 2 ). This resistance is an important obstacle to treatment that can result in chemotherapy failure in many cancers, including colon cancer ( 3 ).…”

“…In addition, as mentioned earlier, from our recent histological findings, we revealed the distortion of submucosal and muscularis external linings in diseased condition as compared to normal colon tissue [7]. Although the preliminary reports complementing histopathological studies followed by comparative proteomic analysis indicate a remarkable difference in the expression of few muscular protein coding genes between the normal and affected tissue colon and poorly formed keratin in affected tissues, we argue that there could be enormous effect of poorly formed keratin filaments in the pouch colon patients leading to disrupted muscle fibres (Table 1) as compared to normal colon.…”

“…The excised pouch is an abnormal tissue suggested by histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry. There are instances of pouch redilatation in CPC type 1 and 2 in which Coloplasty/ Colography is performed as definitive repair at a later stage which could be due to additional muscle coat seen in CPC type 1 and 2 [7]. Furthermore, pouch excision is rendered by shortening of bowel in most of the cases [8].…”

“…In this deformity, varying lengths of the colon are replaced by a pouch like structure that communicates distally with genitourinary tract. Our histopathological and immuno-histochemical findings suggest that CPC has distinct defects in the neuromusculature [1]. An unusual feature of CPC is the prevalence of this malformation in the Indian subcontinent, the highest incidence in the west and north of the India [2].…”
