Histopathological alterations of male and female reproductive systems induced by alloxan in rats

Abstract: The objective of this study is to determine the histological effects experimentally induced by injection of alloxan 100 mg/kg B.w. on the histopathological structure of reproductive organs of male and female albino rats. The results showed that treatment with alloxan cause alteration in testis include irregular shape and size of seminiferous tubules, irregular division of spermatid cells, degeneration and necrosis of Sertoli cells and paucity of sperms in the lumen of tubules. While histological examination of… Show more

“…Oxidative damage is initiated by imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant resulting in mitochondrial damage and DNA damage which are the main manifestation of oxidative stress that occurs in cadmium toxicity [14], [15]. Concomtant use of antioxidants produce improvement in the histological structure of the organ, this finding is in agreement with the finding of other workers [16], [17], [18], [19], [20].…”

“…Also, the phenolic property of silymarin acts to stabilize the free radicals and ROS by donation them electron and therefor preventing lipo-peroxidation by assistance the communication with cellular non-enzymatic antioxidants (24). A developed antioxidant system has been found in the reproductive organs (25), particularly gonads, where this antioxidants have a vital role in protecting reproductive tissues against free radicals and, in turn, preventing their negative effects on reproduction (20). On the other hand, different herbal extracts and herbal-derived substances have protective effects in the reproductive system.…”

“…On the other hand, different herbal extracts and herbal-derived substances have protective effects in the reproductive system. From these herbal extracts, Silymarin was considered as a potent antioxidant agent that can protect most of the biological tissues, including reproductive tissues, such as germ cells (25).…”

“…Also oxidative stress may occur owing to hyperglycemia (28). Hyperglycemia results from caffeine intake, the caffeine reduces the sensitivity of tissues toward insulin, impairs metabolism of glucose, and stimulates stress hormones release (as adrenaline) (26,29).…”
