Introduction: Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic which can cause a chondrotoxic effect in the growing condyle. Researchers found that green tea showed significant health benefits for a large number of disorders. The objective of the present research was to investigate the preventive potential of green tea extract against mandibular chondrotoxicity induced by ciprofloxacin in juvenile Wistar rats. Material and methods: Twenty juvenile male rats were used and divided into four equal groups, the saline/water (S/W), saline/green tea (S/G), ciprofloxacin/water (C/W) and ciprofloxacin/green tea (C/G) treated groups. On day 32 of age, all the animals in C/W and C/G treated groups were subcutaneously injected with ciprofloxacin as two subcutaneous injections of 600 mg/kg of body weight, eight hours apart, while the S/W and S/G groups were subcutaneously injected with saline. The S/G and C/G groups were intragastrically gavaged by green tea extract in an oral dose of 300 mg/kg/ day, 8 days before the subcutaneous injection of saline or ciprofloxacin. On day 34, all the animals were anaesthetized, and the mandibular condyle samples were taken immediately and processed. Results: In comparison with the C/W treated group, the C/G treated group showed a significant increase in the thickness of the mandibular condylar cartilage, cartilage cell number, glycosaminoglycan content, and Bcl-2 immune expression (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study provides the first evidence that green tea extract can significantly decrease the chondrotoxic effects of ciprofloxacin in a rat mandibular condyle cartilage model.

Background: Despite the positive effect of the photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) application on animals, the primary role of this technique on the human condyle is still unclear. Several experimental reports have shown the efficacy of PBMT in inducing cellular changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region during functional treatment of patients with skeletal deformities. Still, the lack of information about its effects on human condyles requires further studies. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of PBMT on the TMJ components following Class III treatment with the reversed twin block (RTB) appliance in growing patients. Materials and Method: Forty children (12 females, 28 males) between the age of nine and eleven years with skeletal Class III were assigned randomly to the RTB group with photobiomodulation (RTB+PBMT) or the control group (RTB). The PBMT was applied to the TMJ region using an 808-nm wavelength Ga-Al-As semiconductor laser device with 5 Joules/cm 2 energydensity on days 1, 3, 7, and 14 of the first month. Afterwards, the irradiation was conducted every 15 days until the end of the treatment. Cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) images were taken before (T1) treatment and following the end of treatment (T2) to assess TMJ and skeletal changes. Results: Condylar volume was significantly increased in the RTB group only by a mean of 287.97 mm 3 (p<0.001). The significantly backward and upward condylar movement was observed in the RTB and RTB+PBMT groups (superior joint space (SJS): 0.26 mm, 0.15 mm; posterior joint space (PJS): 0.42mm, 0.11mm, respectively). The RTB group showed the most remarkable changes. Significant improvement of the sagittal maxilla-mandibular relationship was greater in the RTB+PBMT group compared to the RTB group (p=0.02). Conclusion: There were no considerable differences in the condylar position after Class III treatment between the RTB and the RTB+PBMT groups. But a difference in the condylar volume was noticed between the two group.

RESUMENEl cartílago condilar mandibular es una estructura especializada presente en la superficie de los cóndilos mandibulares. Esta revisión de la literatura permitirá conocer información actual acerca de la estructura del cartílago condilar mandibular, los factores que influyen en el crecimiento de este y revisar los estudios actuales sobre los cambios morfológicos que pueden ocurrir en el cartílago con el envejecimiento. Se realizó una revisión sistemática de artículos científicos recientes. Los resultados obtenidos en la revisión indican que la estructura del cartílago condilar mandibular presenta cuatros capas, asimismo, el cartílago hialino que lo conforma presenta condroblastos maduros e hipertróficos incluso en edades avanzadas. Lo cual brinda la posibilidad de que pueda ser manipulado sin considerar la edad como un factor límite. Los estudios realizados en animales indican que el cartílago condilar mandibular puede ser influenciado por factores como: dieta, edad, sexo, estrés psicológico, factores intrínsecos, aplicación de toxina botulínica y láser. Estos resultados establecen la base para futuros estudios con la finalidad de implementar tratamientos potenciales que puedan ayudar a pacientes con procesos degenerativos en la ATM, como la osteoartritis.Asimismo, es importante fomentar la realización de nuevos estudios enfocados a la aplicación de toxina botulínica y láser, para terapias ortopédicas funcionales a edades tempranas, reducir los tratamientos quirúrgicos, mejorar la calidad y eficacia de los tratamientos actualmente conocidos.
