Histomorphometric Evaluation of the Effects of Mandibular Advancement Appliance and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) with Different Doses on Condylar Cartilage and Subchondral Bone in Rats

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of mandibular advancement appliance and low level laser therapy (LLLT) with different doses on cellular hypertrophic changes in the mandibular condyle of rats. Forty-eight 8-week-old male Wistar albino rats weighing between 260 and 280 g were randomly divided into four experimental and control groups. Group I was the control group; group II was the mandibular advancement appliance group; group III was the 8 J/cm 2 (0.25 W, 20 s) laser irradiation with mandibula… Show more

“…The present study showed that the MCC layer mean thickness and number of cartilage cells in the S/W group were 373 ±0.160 µm and 20.8 ±2.039, respectively. Oksayan et al [33] found that the anterior and posterior total thickness of MCC were 342.198 ±241.77 and 314.69 ±194.15 µm, respectively. Cavalli et al [34] found that the mean number of cartilage cells in MCC in 60-day old adult rats was 416.4 ±79.9.…”

“…Laser with the current parameters may affect these findings. Although previous studies have proven the stimulation effect of LLLT on the condyle, Oksayan's study found deference in tissue response to different parameters [ 43 ]. Untreated subjects must be included to understand the natural growth effect on TMJ structures, which was not attainable in this study due to ethical reasons.…”

“…Se encontraron cambios máximos en las capas de cartílago condilar en la irradiación láser de 8J/cm 2 con el grupo de dispositivos mandibulares. (38) Se requiere realizar más estudios que puedan confirmar si la aplicación de láser puede ser útil en terapias ortopédicas funcionales. Asimismo, se necesita más investigación para evaluar los diferentes parámetros de aplicación de terapia láser de bajo nivel y los diferentes métodos de análisis radiológico y celular.…”
