Aim Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) is the main tertiary hospital that has performed more than 600 biopsies since its establishment. Although Indigenous people in Australia’s Northern Territory (NT) has the highest rate of renal replacement therapy, the histopathology pattern of their renal diseases is still under discussed. We aimed to analyse the histopathology pattern of patients undergoing renal biopsy in RDH from June 2007 to June 2020. Secondary aims include clinical indication and survival analysis of patients with kidney biopsies. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study on all native kidney biopsy reports from patients over the age of 16, from June 2007 to June 2020. Descriptive statistics was used to summarise age, sex, indigeneity, histopathological pattern, and mortality. Categorical values were expressed as absolute frequencies and percentages. Survival analysis was performed using multivariate analyses and Cox proportional hazard regression model. Results There were 364 native renal biopsies included in the analysis. Sub-nephrotic proteinuria was the most common clinical indication for kidney biopsy (n = 160,47.8%). Diabetes nephropathy (DN) was the most common pathological finding (n = 71,12.8%). Indigenous population who had dialysis performs poorly compared to their non-indigenous counterpart (HR 2.37,95% CI 1.53–3.67,p < 0.001). Conclusion Diabetic nephropathy is the most common native kidney biopsy in the NT with higher mortality among indigenous patients. This study supports the previous findings of indigenous female excess, younger age of kidney disease requiring kidney biopsy, and excess of diabetic nephropathy in the top-end of the NT. It can be speculated that some diabetic patients had atypical features prompting a biopsy.

INTRODUCTION: Kidneys are vital organs of the body with multiple functions like excretory, acid base balance and maintenance of blood pressure. Renal parenchyma is mostly subjected to noxious insults but is last to respond. Simple nephrectomy is done for irreversibly damaged kidney. Most common indication for nephrectomy is chronic pyelonephritis. Aim of the study is to analyze the histopathological patterns of renal lesions and to analyze age and sex distribution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included a total number of 70 cases, during a period of 2 years i.e., from October 2017 to September 2019. All renal biopsies and nephrectomy specimens received in pathology department, SVS Medical College, Mahabubnagar, Telangana, India were included in the study. RESULTS: In our study, 70 cases were analyzed. Out of which majority of the lesions (25.7 % ) were in the age group of 21-40 years and showed male preponderance (68.5 %). Present study showed chronic pyelonephritis being the most common non-neoplastic lesion. Among malignant tumors renal cell carcinoma was most common. CONCLUSION: The present study reveals various histological patterns of lesions in renal biopsies and nephrectomy specimens. Our study reveals that non-neoplastic lesions are more commonly encountered lesions.

Systematic registration and examination of biopsy-related data in Central and Eastern Europe are scarce, while the health condition of the population is worse compared to other more developed countries. We aim to create a database and analyze the distribution and temporal variation of the renal biopsy diagnoses in Hungary, including the effect of the recent coronavirus pandemic. The diagnoses were standardized according to the recommendation of the European Renal Association. Native biopsy samples processed between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2020, were analyzed. During the 15 years, 2140 native kidney biopsies were performed. The number of samples increased from 24.5 to 57.9 per million person-years and the median age from 37 to 51 years (p < 0.0001). The predominance of glomerular diseases was stable. The most frequent glomerulopathy was IgA nephropathy (21.5%), followed by focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (17.7%), and membranous nephropathy (15.7%). Trends showed the rise of ANCA-associated vasculitis. During the coronavirus pandemic, there was a decrease in the number of kidney biopsies and the proportion of membranous nephropathies. The diagnostic trends in our database showed increasing biopsy rates among the elderly and the growing frequencies of age-related diseases, which emphasizes the importance of altering medical focus according to demographic changes in this area.
