Histologic Structure of the Uropygial Gland of the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)

Abstract: This study was performed to determine the histologic structure of the uropygial gland in an osprey. The gland was composed of two elongated lobes which were enclosed in a capsule of connective tissue. Each lobe of the gland had a large central cavity with one excretory duct. The secretory tubules consisted of four cell types: basal, intermediate, secretory, and degenerative. The intermediate cells in the osprey were few in number and did not form a layer, while secretory and degenerative cells consist of 2-3 s… Show more

“…The secretory epithelium of the six species included in our study was composed of the same epithelial layers as those of other species (Jacob and Ziswiler 1982;Montalti et al 2001;Sawad 2006;Harem et al 2010;Kozlu et al 2011;Sadoon 2011). The lobes showed a PAS positive reaction, as demonstrated in the rock pigeon (Columba livia) (Montalti et al 2001).…”

“…The histology of the uropygial gland has been studied in different bird species and some dissimilar characteristics have been described (Hsu 1936;Bo 1953;Bhattacharyya 1972;Bride 1975;Menon et al 1981;Kamiya et al 1986;Suzuki 1994;Montalti et al 2001;Sandilands et al 2004;Sawad 2006;Harem et al 2010). However, no studies have linked the histological structure of the gland with the environment.…”

“…The shape is as has been described by Johnston (1988) for this species. The uropygial gland of the Southern Caracara has a primary chamber or cavity, and this structure is also present in other bird species (Jacob and Ziswiler 1982;Harem et al 2010;Kozlu et al 2011;Chiale et al 2015). “…These researchers have pointed out to differences in the thickness of trabeculae and the cells composing the epithelial layers lining the tubules in the glandular structure pertaining to wild and domestic ducks. In a previous study conducted by Harem et al (2010) in the osprey, the epithelium lining the tubules was determined to be composed of 4 different types of epithelial cells from the base to the lumen. Similar findings were obtained in the uropygial gland of the stork in the present study.…”

“…These cavities collect the secretion of tubules, which are arranged radially in their periphery. The secretion of the gland is transported to the surface of the skin by ducts and is discharged into a narrow papilla, which in general is single in number (Sawad, 2006;Harem et al).…”
