Introduction Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) affects 1–3% of the population, but its pathogenesis remains unclear. The coexistence of musculoskeletal hypermobility and scoliosis in many inherited syndromes raises the possibility that isolated musculoskeletal hypermobility may contribute to AIS development or progression. Methods We performed a systematic review of the evidence for a relationship between isolated musculoskeletal hypermobility and AIS. A meta-analysis was planned, but if not possible, a narrative evidence synthesis was planned. Results Nineteen studies met eligibility criteria for inclusion. One study was excluded due to insufficient quality. Substantial heterogeneity in study design and methodology negated meta-analysis, so a narrative review was performed. Of the 18 studies included, seven suggested a positive association and eight found no association. Three reported the prevalence of musculoskeletal hypermobility in individuals with AIS. Overall, there was no convincing population-based evidence for an association between musculoskeletal hypermobility and AIS, with only two case–control studies by the same authors presenting compelling evidence for an association. Although populations at extremes of hypermobility had a high prevalence of spinal curvature, these studies were at high risk of confounding. Wide variation in methods of measuring musculoskeletal hypermobility and the challenge of assessing AIS in population-based studies hinder study comparison. Conclusions There is a paucity of high-quality evidence examining the association between isolated musculoskeletal hypermobility and AIS. Large-scale prospective studies with adequate adjustment for potential confounding factors could clarify the relationship between musculoskeletal hypermobility and AIS to elucidate its role in the pathogenesis of AIS.

Bu çalışma erkek çocukların hipermobilite oranını belirlemek ve dinamik dengeleri arasındaki farkı karşılaştırmak amacıyla yapılmıştır. Materyal ve Yöntem: Şanlıurfa ilinde yaşayan 156 sedanter erkek çocuk (yaş ortalamaları: 11,7±0,672 yıl) Helsinki kriterleri'ne göre hazırlanmış bilgilendirilmiş olur alma formları ile gönüllük esasına dayalı, velilerinden izin alınarak çalışmaya katılmıştır. Hipermobilite ölçümleri Beighton kriterlerine göre değerlendirilmiş, kesim noktası 4 olarak alınarak 4 ve üzeri puan alan katılımcılar hipermobil diğerleri non-hipermobil olmak üzere iki grup oluşturulmuştur. Dinamik denge, düzeltilmiş bacak boyu oranı dikkate alınarak uygulanan 'Y Denge Testi' ile değerlendirilmiştir. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde hücre başına düşen kişi sayısı paralellik varsayımını sağlayamamasından dolayı Mann Whitney U Testi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Beighton skorlamasına kullanılarak yapılan veri analizi sonuçlarına göre; araştırmaya katılan 156 katılımcının 21'i (%13,5) 4 ve üzeri puan alarak "hipermobil" 135'i ise (%86,5) 0-3 puan alarak 'non-hipermobil' olarak bulunmuştur. Grupların dinamik denge özelliğini ölçen Y denge testi sonuçları analizine göre üç erişim yönünün toplamının, sağ bacak (U=1179, p>0,05)) ve sol bacak (U=1371, p>0,05) bacak birleşik skorlarına göre anlamlı bir farkın olmadığı görülmektedir (p>0,05). Sonuçlar: Bu sonuç, spor yapmayan hipermobil ve non-hipermobil erkek çocukların dinamik denge özellikleri arasında anlamlı fark olmadığı ve hipermobilitenin dinamik denge üzerinde etkisinin bulunmadığını göstermektedir. Dynamic Balance Ability and Hypermobility In Pre-School Children Who Participate Gymnastic Training

The aim of this study was to examine dynamic balance ability and hypermobility according to gender and gymnastics training participation in 6 years of age children. In this research, 76 male and 86 female totally 162 children with the mean body height 114.51±5.15 cm and with the mean body weight 20.54±3.73 kg participated voluntarily. While 47 of the children participating gymnastics training for 12 weeks, 115 of the children continued regular preschool program. Dynamic balance ability measured by prokin tecno body with easy base for 30 seconds. Hypermobility identified by The Beighton criteria and cutoff point was taken as 4. For dynamic balance ability in 6 years of age there were statistically significant difference in favor of gymnastic participation compared with the others (p<0.001). There was a statistically significant difference in dynamic balance ability in favor of girls, according to gender (p<0.005). And hypermobility was significantly different in favor of gymnastic participation (p<0.05). The hypermobility rate of males is 23.7%, females is 43%, gymnasts is 51.1% and sedentary is 27%. There wasn't any correlation between dynamic balance ability and hypermobility. As a result, although they have similar physical characteristics and in the same age group, their dynamic balance performance and hypermobility differentiated depending on factors of gymnastics training and also it was observed that the dynamic balance performance was in favor of girls. This study emphasized the importance of early participation in gymnastics.
