Hip fracture pattern at a major Tanzanian referral hospital: focus on fragility hip fractures

Abstract: We concluded that men and women contributed almost equally to the fragility hip fracture burden. The dominant cause of hip fractures overall was low-energy injuries. There was an increase in proportions of fragility hip fractures in the period of January 2011 to December 2015.

“…Although fall was the major reason for hip fractures in our study, the contribution of fall was slightly lower than that reported in studies from developed countries ( Table 6 ) 12 21 22 30 31 32 33 34 35 36) . Many studies from developed countries report fall as the contributor for over 90% of fractures while only about three-quarters of fractures in our study were the result of falls 37 38) .…”

“…There are considerable variations among studies with respect to the definition of hip fractures in elderly populations. The present study included all patients 50 years or older, similar to other previous studies from India and other developing countries, which was chosen with the consideration that life expectancy in India is approximately 69 years 12 19 20 21 22 23 24) . However, it is possible that some younger patients in our study may not have had a true osteoporotic fracture.…”

“…The incidence of intertrochanteric fractures is increasing remarkably due to the increasing elderly population and rapidly developing automobile industry. [1,2] Surgical intervention is the most common treatment for intertrochanteric fractures, and the preferred surgical strategy is appropriate internal fixation and early mobilization. [3] The therapeutic goals are to achieve stable fixation, allow early mobilization, restore the baseline functional mobility and independence, and improve patient's quality of life.…”

“…Fracture Liaison Services should seek to address the issue of fragility fractures within their given locality, and, of course, there will be variation in demographics of the patient group [44] and the healthcare resources available. However, the resources required to implement a FLS are actually fairly limited.…”
