Highly efficient Q-switched laser operation of Yb:Y_3Ga_5O_12 garnet crystal

Abstract: We demonstrate, for the first time, passively Q-switched laser operation of Yb:Y(3)Ga(5)O(12) garnet crystal. An output power of 4.53 W at 1031 nm was generated at a pulse repetition rate of 55.6 kHz, with a Cr(4+):YAG crystal acting as saturable absorber whose initial transmission was 97.5%, the corresponding pulse energy, duration and peak power were respectively 81.5 μJ, 28.5 ns and 2.86 kW. Laser pulses at a lower repetition rate of 18.2 kHz were also achieved at 1025 nm while the initial transmission of t… Show more

“…Figure 5 depicts the laser emission spectra for different PRFs and cw operation, which were measured at 𝑃 abs = 7.12 W. The laser emission covered a wavelength range of 1031-1037 nm. In comparison with the case of the Yb:GGG ordered garnet crystal laser, [19] the laser emission band obtained here proves to be much broader. One can also note that the detailed structures of the laser emission spectrum for different PRFs are different to some extent.…”

“…The optimum operational conditions (T and T 0 ) are also listed for each crystal. The results for those crystals without citation sources in the table are from our previous work [18][19][20][21][22][23]. One can clearly see that the laser pulse energy produced with Yb:GdCOB is considerably higher than that generated with others except for Yb:YCOB.…”
