Highly Cited in the South: International Collaboration and Research Recognition Among Brazil’s Highly Cited Researchers

Abstract: For researchers in the global South, international recognition in science arguably involves engaging with the norms, ideas, and people leading research activity in the global North. This article explores the relationship between international research collaboration and the publication activity of highly cited researchers in Brazil, a country that exerts regional leadership in scientific production in Latin America, but remains relatively peripheral to global science. This study examined the career trajectories… Show more

“…While this is still incipient in the Humanities and Social Sciences, it should be remembered that publications in collaboration are not common in these areas but are increasing (Haddow et al 2017). The present study goes beyond that seen by Martinez and Sá (2020) who stated that engagement with the academic Anglosphere is necessary for highly cited status, derived from co-authored publications with collaborators from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Here, despite the importance of these countries, non-Anglophone countries were also important for Brazilian collaborations.…”

“…According to Martinez and Sá ( 2020 ), Brazil exerts regional leadership in scientific production in Latin America but remains relatively peripheral to global science. This is not seen here, where Brazilian researchers are seen to be effectively collaborating to world prominent themes of high impact and to advance the innovative science.…”

“…There has been some criticism of bibliometric methods, arguing that such analyses further disadvantage peripheral countries and reinforce asymmetries in the process of global knowledge creation (Hountondji, 2006;Martinez & Sá, 2020;Velho, 1986). While we recognise the unequal footing of many researchers and research institutions from this region, this study has offered some empirical evidence on the existence of large variations within this region.…”

“…Bibliometric indicators are widely used in the evaluation of research output by governments, university administrators, and researchers. At the same time, the institutionalisation of international databases has supported the development of new knowledge on global science (Gingras, 2016;Kwiek, 2020;Martinez & Sá, 2020;Muller, 2018). The present study contributes to this body of knowledge and uses the Web of Science (WoS) as the source of the bibliometric data.…”

“…Prompted by an analysis of highly cited scientists in Latin America, Martinez and Sá (2020) stated that while yet a regional leader, as far as scienti c production is concerned, Brazil is still relatively peripheral to global science. Mc Manus et al (2020) argue that their ndings point in a different direction, one in which "Brazilian researchers are seen to be effectively collaborating to world prominent themes of high impact and to advance the innovative science".…”
