Highly accurate transition frequencies in the H2 Lyman and Werner absorption bands

Abstract: (v , 0) Werner bands for v = 0-4, using a narrow-band tunable extreme UV laser source at wavelengths λ = 92-105 nm in conjunction with the technique of 1 + 1 two-photon ionization. The measurements can be divided into three categories for which varying absolute accuracies were obtained. Special focus was on the B, v = 2-5 bands, where an accuracy of 0.004 cm −1 or δν/ν = 4 × 10 −8 is achieved. For transitions to B, v ≤ 13 and C, v ≤ 3 states the accuracy is 0.005 cm −1 or δν/ν = 5 × 10 −8 . Due to a different… Show more

“…A detailed description of the experimental procedures and of the results is given in a sequence of papers. [52][53][54] Similar investigations of the XUV-laser spectrum of HD were performed in view of the fact that HD lines were also observed in high-redshift spectra towards quasar sources. 55,56 Additional spectroscopic studies of H 2 were performed assessing the level energies in these excited states in an indirect manner, thereby verifying and even improving the transition frequencies in the Lyman and Werner bands.…”

“…The setup was used for an extensive experimental investigation on the spectroscopy of the Lyman and Werner bands of H 2 calibrating in total 138 rotationally resolved lines at an accuracy varying from 0.004 to 0.011 cm À1 , depending on wavelength range [88]. The experimental setup employed for the H 2 laboratory spectroscopic studies is presented in Fig.…”

“…From an analysis of combination differences between R J and P J 2 lines, it follows that the data are more consistent than estimated; hence, the stated uncertainty represents a conservative estimate. Further details on the experimental methods and a critical evaluation of the uncertainties are given by Philip et al [17].…”
