Higher-precision experimental statistics for the selection of early and upright common bean lines

Abstract: The development of early and upright common bean cultivars is necessary to meet the demand of producers. The objectives of this work were to evaluate more precise experimental statistics for the selection of early and upright common bean lines and identify the traits that provide better genetic differentiation between lines. For this purpose, 156 common bean lines of different grain colours were evaluated in 23 experiments carried out in the southern region of Brazil between 1998 and 2015. The traits related t… Show more

“…They are a source of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and trace minerals (Mukankusi et al., 2019). Brazil is one of the main world producers and consumers of common beans, being a basic food used daily in the Brazilian diet with a consumption of 17 kg person −1 year −1 (Ribeiro et al., 2020). In general, Brazilian consumers prefer Mesoamerican carioca (cream seed coat with brown stripes) and black (preto) beans, which account for approximately 70% and 15% of the total common bean production, respectively (Pereira et al., 2019).…”

“…The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a cultivated species with socioeconomic relevance and is a major source of vegetable proteins and nutrients worldwide, mainly in the Americas and parts of Africa (Ribeiro et al 2020, Zeffa et al 2020, FAOSTAT 2021. In Brazil, the carioca grain type accounts for approximately 70% of national bean consumption (Pereira et al 2019); however, few commercial cultivars of this group exhibit high yield potential, upright plant architecture, and disease resistance when considered simultaneously.…”

“…In 2019, it produced about 2,360 tons of seeds in an area of 1,619 ha (CONAB, 2020a). Common bean is a basic food used daily in the Brazilian diet with a consumption of 17 kg person −1 year −1 (Ribeiro et al, 2020). To meet this demand, common beans are grown throughout the all year under different cultivation systems and with different technological levels (Heinemann et al, 2016).…”
