Higher order reentrant post modes in cylindrical cavities

Abstract: Reentrant cavities are microwave resonant devices employed in a number of different areas of physics. They are appealing due to their simple frequency tuning mechanism, which offers large tuning ranges. Reentrant cavities are, in essence, 3D lumped LC circuits consisting of a conducting central post embedded in a resonant cavity. The lowest order reentrant mode (which transforms from the T M 010 mode) has been extensively studied in past publications. In this work we show the existence of higher order reentran… Show more

“…Their mode shape based on the electromagnetic modelling is shown in figure 1(A). It can be seen that modes (1) and (2) are the first and second order re-entrant post modes [51] as these have all the electric field in the gap between the post and lid. (3) and (4), on the other hand, appear to be perturbed rectangular cavity modes that would be degenerate if the cavity had xy symmetry.…”

“…The gap between the top post and cavity adjusts the mode of frequency and traps the electric field within the gap. The dominant TM 010 mode [17] is utilized in this design. In the parametric study, the radius (r 0 in Fig.…”

“…A distinct feature of a reentrant cavity is the existence of a gap between the top of the rod and the lid of the cavity. The cavity supports a series of electromagnetic resonant modes 30,31 . The size of the gap between the post and the lid determines the capacitance of the effective lumped LC resonator, and hence strongly influences the resonant frequency of the cavity.…”
