Understanding the differences in yield traits of rice among pothole seedling of mechanical transplanting (PSMT), carpet seedling of mechanical transplanting (CSMT) and mechanical direct seeding (MDS) is of great importance not only to rice scientists but also rice farmers to develop a high-yield production system under mechanical conditions in a rice-wheat rotation system. However, such traits are yet to be studied among rice varieties of japonica-indica hybrid rice (JIHR), japonica conventional rice (JCR) and indica hybrid rice (IHR). Field experiments were conducted in 2014 and 2015, where six cultivars of the three rice types JIHR, JCR and IHR were grown individually with PSMT, CSMT and MDS methods, under respective managements for each method to achieve the maximum attainable yield. Results showed that (i) the PSMT significantly increased grain yield of JIHR by 22.0 and 7.1%, of JCR by 15.6 and 3.7% and of IHR by 22.5 and 7.4%, compared to MDS and CSMT on average across the two years, respectively. The highest yield was produced by the combination of JIHR and PSMT; (ii) high yield under PSMT was mainly attributed to large sink capacity and high-efficient dry matter accumulation. With sufficient panicles per hectare, the increase of spikelet number per panicle, especially the increase in spikelet number of the secondary rachis-branches was determined to be the optimal approach for developing a large sink capacity for rice under PSMT. The optimal tillers development, large leaf area index at heading stage, and high leaf area duration, crop growth rate and net assimilation rate during grain-filling phase could be the cause of sufficient dry matter accumulation for rice under PSMT; (iii) moreover, the PSMT favored plant growth as well as enriched the stems plus sheaths during grain-filling phase, as compared with CSMT and MDS. These results suggest that PSMT may be an alternative approach to increasing grain yield in a rice-wheat rotation system in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China.

Breeding rice for heavy panicle is prospective to improve production. However, the information on genotype x environment interaction (GxE) of rice panicle morphology is limited. This study was aimed to evaluate the GxE interaction on panicle morphology of heavy panicle rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes. The experiments were conducted in four environmental conditions. The research was conducted from December 2017 to May 2019 at the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, IPB University, using 24 genotypes (F5-F6 generation) with 6 check varieties. The experimental design was an augmented design (3 replicates of check). Analysis of variance showed that GxE interaction effects were significant on the panicle length, number of axis nodes, primary branches number, secondary branches number, tertiary branches number, number of grains per panicle, and grain density per primary branch. The results showed that the two environments in the rainy season produced higher primary branches number, secondary branches number, tertiary branches number, number of grain per panicle, and grain density per primary branch than the two environments in the dry season. Correlation and path analyses showed that panicle length, number of secondary branches, and grain density per primary branch had a significant and direct positive effect on the number of grains per panicle. Common population characteristics of direct‐seeded hybrid indica rice for high yield

Direct seeding of rice has attracted attention because of its simplicity and rapidity compared with traditional cultivation methods. However, the geographical location of the rice region in Southwest China is complex, and the common characteristics of high yield of direct seeding hybrid indica rice and the law of nutrient absorption and accumulation are still unclear. This study results demonstrated that the mean yield of high‐yield varieties (HYV) in the two ecological points increased by 17.68%–19.98% and 17.37%–27.06%, respectively, compared with low‐yield varieties (LYV). The high tillering ability and effective tillering rate of HYV promoted a large leaf area index (LAI) and a strong photosynthetic capacity and stimulated the accumulation of aboveground biomass and nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium nutrients in rice plants, which were finally transported and allocated to the grains to maintain high yields. Correlation analysis indicated that yield and its components were closely related to spatial population structure and nutrient accumulation and allocation. In particular, LAI at the full heading stage, net photosynthetic rate, aboveground biomass from jointing to maturity stage, and nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium accumulation and distribution from jointing to full heading stage have the strongest correlation with yield and its components. Therefore, improving the effective tillering rate and LAI, as well as the accumulation and distribution of aboveground biomass, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium of rice plants from jointing to full heading stage, are the common laws for the formation of high yield of direct seeding hybrid rice in different ecological areas.
