High transparency in the structural color resin films through quasi-amorphous arrays of colloidal silica nanospheres

Abstract: Novel quasi-amorphous structural color resin films are highly transparent, and have a uniform shining reflection color and physical rigidity, and so have enormous potential.

“…This phenomenon is similar to the previously reported AA resin lms. 13,14 In general, the transmittance decreased as the f silica of AAs increased, and this phenomenon was owing to the strong reection of AAs. We also performed a transmittance stability test aer all samples were stored in DI water for 155 days (Fig.…”

“…22 In this case, n eff ¼ 1.427 for sample C (f silica ¼ 30%). Then, the reection peak wavelength l R of the vertical incident was determined according to the Bragg-Snell law [eqn (2)] as follows: 13,14 l R ¼ 2d int n eff (2) Accordingly, the 425 nm and 463 nm reection peak wavelengths (sample C) before and aer hydration and n eff can be calculated using eqn (2) to obtain d int_1 ¼ 148.9 nm (before hydration) and d int_2 ¼ 162.2 nm (aer hydration). The d int_1 value was very consistent with the D mean (approximately 151 nm) of the results from the LPSA (Fig.…”

“…Generally, there are two strategies in accomplishing this task: reducing the degree of order of the photonic structures or changing the local geometry [18]. In the first approach, amorphous photonic structures with short-range order can reduce the angle dependency of the structurally colored materials, which have been widely fabricated by spray-coating [19], gel or ionic liquid suspending [20], adding additives [21], spin coating and drop-casting [22]. For the later, colloid particles are assembled into spherical or hemispherical aggregates, such as micro-cylinders, micro-beads, fibers and superparticles [23,24].…”
