High Titers of Chlamydia trachomatis Antibodies in Brazilian Women with Tubal Occlusion or Previous Ectopic Pregnancy

Abstract: Objective. To evaluate serum chlamydia antibody titers (CATs) in tubal occlusion or previous ectopic pregnancy and the associated risk factors.Methods. The study population consisted of 55 women wih tubal damage and 55 parous women. CAT was measured using the whole-cell inclusion immunofluorescence test and cervical chlamydial DNA detected by PCR. Odds ratios were calculated to assess variables associated withC. trachomatis infection.Results. The prevalence of chlamydial antibodies and antibody titers in women… Show more

“…The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 50 million cases of infection by Chlamydia trachomatis occur per year worldwide [2]. Chlamydia trachomatis infection of the genital tract can cause inflammatory pelvic disease, venereal lymphogranuloma, urethritis, cervicitis, salpingitis, bartholinitis, endometritis, tubarian infertility and ectopic pregnancy [2][3][4]. The health costs due to complications caused by this type of infection are elevated.…”

“…Consequently, these infectious agents can be considered microorganisms that are well adapted to the human body, because they can grow without causing strong responses from the organism, which is the reason it is difficult to diagnose such infections [6]. This peculiarity retards treatment, allowing cases of genital infection to propagate to the upper genital tract, causing endometritis and salpingitis [2][3][4].…”

“…Historically, serological testing has been used in investigation of women with pelvic inflammatory disease [113], ectopic pregnancies [114], recurrent miscarriages [12] and tubal infertility [115]. Despite this, serological testing to identify Chlamydia specific antibodies is not considered to be useful in the diagnosis of genital tract infection, for a number of reasons.…”
