High Throughput Screening in Agrochemical Research

Abstract: The demand for new herbicides, insecticides and fungicides led to a steady increase in the number of compounds being tested to find novel market products. To keep pace with the rising workload, high throughput screening (HTS) technologies have been introduced. In agrochemical research miniaturised in vivo tests on whole real target organisms are now possible and are an integral part of the screening cascade. A complementary target based in vitro HTS has also been established in agrochemical research. Target ba… Show more

“…Tietjen et al have reviewed the applications of omics technologies to the conventional agrochemical development method. 7) The influence of omics methods can already be observed at the IUPAC meeting in Kobe this summer with the theme "Evolution for Crop Protection, Public Health, and Environmental Safety." Platform sessions include: Genomics, Proteomics and Metabolomics" and "Drug Design Based Upon Agrogenomics" with a presentation on a "Proposal for SAR-omics as a paradigm for lead evolution in drug design."…”

“…6) One approach to address these shifting research trends is through the application of omics technologies. 7) In agrochemistry, the use of genomics to identify suitable product candidates and the introduction of combinatorial chemistry to produce compounds for biological screening were identified as important developments over the last 10 years. 5) For example, it is expected that functional genomics will be useful in the identification of novel targets for herbicide development and aid in the development of assays systems for discovering lead compounds.…”

“…18). High-throughput screening in agrochemical discovery has been reviewed recently (Tietjen et al, 2005;Drewes et al, 2012). Another approach to discover new herbicidal precepts consists of the systematic analysis of plant gene functions (Lein et al, 2004).…”
