High-throughput rapid-prototyping of low-cost paper-based microfluidics

Abstract: Paper-based micro analytical devices offer significant advantages compared to the conventional microfluidic chips including cost-effectiveness, ease of fabrication, and ease of use while preserving critical features including strong capillary action and biological compatibility. In this work, we demonstrate an inexpensive, rapid method for high-throughput fabrication of paper-based microfluidics by patterning hydrophobic barriers using a desktop pen plotter integrated with a custom-made, low-cost paper feeder.… Show more

“…3). Past investigations using different fabrication methodologies and barrier materials, reported contact angle ranging from 110~128° 32,37,43,44 . This showed significant promise towards the use of composite toner ink for patterning hydrophobic barriers in µPADs comparable to other conventional materials like SU-8 resin 45 , wax 46 and PDMS 36 .…”

“…Recently, Tasoglu group used the pen-plotter-based approach to study the performance of variety of commercial permanent markers to draw hydrophobic features on paper substrates. The microfluidic devices prepared from this approach were used for proof-of-concept colorimetric detection of glucose [62]. The same group used 3D printed multiple-pen holder to customize the pen-plotter for developing a continuous-ink, multiplexed pen-plotter for low-cost, high-throughput fabrication of paper-based microfluidics, as shown in Figure 9.…”

“…Our group leveraged the hydrophobic nature of permanent marker ink, specifically Comix broad-tip markers, to produce the hydrophobic barriers necessary for micropads. 122 The permanent marker was then attached to an AxiDraw desktop pen plotter to repeatably produce hydrophobic patterns on chromatography paper. This method is very low cost, as it only requires markers and a pen plotter system.…”
