Paper-based assays for urine analysis

Abstract: A transformation of the healthcare industry is necessary and imminent: hospital-centered, reactive care will soon give way to proactive, person-centered care which focuses on individuals' well-being. However, this transition will only be made possible through scientific innovation. Next-generation technologies will be the key to developing affordable and accessible care, while also lowering the costs of healthcare. A promising solution to this challenge is low-cost continuous health monitoring; this approach a… Show more

“…Urinary pH analysis can be used to monitor kidney functionality, renal tubular acidosis, hydration, and other urinary (Table 1). 89 In fact, pH is a routine clinical investigation performed to assess kidney functionality. 90 In comparison to blood, sweat and urine, saliva is a more readily available body uid, especially for patients suffering from sweat inhibiting conditions or those who suffer from chronic renal failure.…”

“…This shift from a reactive to a more proactive approach, encompassing preventive, evidence-based, and person-centered care, improves the quality of care and decreases the costs of healthcare [1]. To meet this much-needed transformation, low-cost and compact technologies should be developed to continuously perform health measurements [2]. Ease of accessibility to low-cost assays for continuous health monitoring is essential to improve patients' well-being.…”

“…They however either are expensive or have small throughput, limiting their broader applications. Meanwhile, in biochemical analysis, paper-based devices have recently been popular [7][8][9][10][11]. Paper-based device for pesticide residue detection can be of great interest for on-the-go applications in agriculture and biomedical fields.…”
