High temperature properties of BiScO3–PbTiO3 piezoelectric ceramics

Abstract: Smart actuators and intelligent structures are sought after for aeronautical applications. As a result of high Curie temperature (430 °C) and piezoelectric coefficient (>200 pC/N), BiScO3–PbTiO3 (BS-PT) ceramics are prospective materials for high temperature actuators. This paper reports on the temperature dependent electrical, ferroelectric, and electromechanical properties of liquid phase sintered BS-PT ceramics. Compared to solid state sintered BS-PT, liquid phase sintered BS-PT with Bi2O3 showed imp… Show more

“…These compounds are being investigated extensively as alternative to state-of-the-art Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) for expanding the operation temperature of high sensitivity piezoelectric ceramics beyond 200 ºC, up to 400 ºC [7][8][9].…”

“…The excellent performance of Bi-perovskites in solid solution with Pb-based perovskites were predicted and reported [2,3]. For example, PbTiO 3 -Bi(Zn 1/2 Ti 1/2 )O 3 [4][5][6], PbTiO 3 -Bi(Mg 1/2 Ti 1/2 )O 3 [7,8], PbTiO 3 -Bi(Ni 1/2 Ti 1/2 )O 3 [9], PbTiO 3 -BiScO 3 [10,11], and PbTiO 3 -BiInO 3 [12,13] compounds have been reported to exhibit a high Curie temperature (T C ), which is a great advantage for high temperature applications. These Biperovskites were also investigated in solid solutions with Pb-free ferroelectric materials such as BaTiO 3 .…”

“…Recent studies were mostly focused on improving the electrical properties of BiScO 3 -based solid solutions through various strategies, such as fabricating fine-grain ceramics [8], creating excess PbO or Bi 2 O 3 [9] and doping some agents [10][11][12]. In these studies, in order to minimize the loss of Pb and Bi during sintering process, all samples were sintered in sealed crucibles filled with sacrificial powders.…”
