High-Temperature Oxidation of Fe3Al Intermetallic Alloy Prepared by Additive Manufacturing LENS

Abstract: The isothermal oxidation of Fe-28Al-5Cr (at%) intermetallic alloy microalloyed with Zr and B (<0.08 at%) in air atmosphere, in the temperature range of 1000 to 1200 °C, was studied. The investigation was carried out on the thin-walled (<1 mm) elements prepared by Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) from alloy powder of a given composition. Characterization of the specimens, after the oxidation, was conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM, with back-scatter detector (BSE) a… Show more

“…Laser solid forming (LSF) is an advanced material-forming technology that can be used to fabricate high-performance 3D near-net shape metal components without the need for tooling [1,2]. Samples were deposited point-by-point, line-by-line, and layer-by-layer via the melting/solidification of metal powders.…”

“…Moreover, the structure refinement and mechanical properties are also presented. Previous studies [34,35] showed that this material had a good corrosion resistance, some ductility at room temperature and high strength at elevated temperatures.…”

“…Fe-Al intermetallic compounds have attracted the attention of many researchers due to their unique properties, including oxidation and corrosion resistance [1][2][3][4][5][6], considerable high-temperature strength, and creep resistance [7][8][9][10][11]. In addition, a significant advantage of Fe-Al alloys is the low cost of substrates, which enables an economically justified manufacturing process [12][13][14][15][16].…”
