High‐sensitivity capillary and microchip electrophoresis using electrokinetic supercharging

Abstract: Electrokinetic supercharging (EKS) is considered as one of the most powerful online preconcentration techniques in electrophoresis. It combines the efficient preconcentration power of field-amplified sample injection and the exceptional selective nature of transient isotachophoresis. It has a wide range of applications to different types of analytes ranging from small ions to large proteins and DNA fragments. This comprehensive review--up to date--provides listing for all the works, developments, and advances … Show more

“…Introduced nine years ago, EKS combines the efficient stacking power of FESI and the highly selective nature of tITP . Consequently, the technique provides enhancement in detection sensitivity of much higher order than solely using FASI or tITP.…”

“…20 While the separation typically takes place in a narrow-bore silica capillary in CE, it is usually performed in a planar microfluidic device in MCE. CE and MCE occupy a distinctive position within the separation science field and are considered in many ways as a hybrid between slab gel electrophoresis and LC and are usually compared with these two.…”

“…Subsequent works on EKS for CE and MCE have been reviewed with a major focus on theoretical and computer simulation analysis of critical factors that affect the performance of EKI and tITP . As was also highlighted in the recent review , research efforts of various groups have proven potentially universal applicability of EKS, including metal ions, pharmaceuticals, peptides, DNA fragments, and proteins, importantly both in capillary and microchip formats.…”
