Microwave transduction is a novel research field in gas sensing owing to its simplicity, low cost, passive, and non-contact operations that indicate a huge potential in applications for gas sensing. At present, the study of microwave gas sensors is limited to testing the macroscopic performance of materials. Although the permittivity change of materials is the reason for microwave transduction, the knowledge of the fundamental mechanism is an urgent requirement for boosting the development of microwave gas sensors. In this review, we summarized the presented progresses of microwave gas sensors, including the performance of the different materials and propagative structures, as well as their sensitive signal. We have attempted to explain the sensitive mechanism of these materials, discuss the function of the propagative structure, and analyze the sensitive signal extracted from the parameters of electromagnetic waves. Finally, the challenges in the study of sensitive materials and propagative structures used in microwave gas sensors are analyzed. It is clear from the published literatures that microwave transduction provide a new route for gas detection, and it is expected that commercial manifestation will occur. The future research on microwave gas sensors will continue to exploit their sensitive materials and propagative structure for different applications. The understanding of the microscopic polarization interactions with gases will assist in and guide the fabrication of high-performance microwave gas sensors in the future.

This article presents the developing of interdigital capacitor (IDC) based symmetric coplanar waveguide (CPW) sensor to characterize the complex permittivity of unknown dielectric sheets. The symmetric structure is realized by using two identical 3 dB CPW dividers where each branch is loaded with an IDC unit. The proposed method is designed using three, five, and seven fingers of the IDC unit, and the measurement sensitivity is analyzed accordingly. The permittivity of tested samples is extracted by the genetic algorithm. To validate the robust sensing performance of the proposed method, simulation and experimental tests are performed and analyzed, and the accuracy is compared with published values. The proposed method gives the maximum error of 3.42%. With the feature of high-sensitivity, the proposed sensor can be used as an excellent candidate for determining the permittivity of materials in microwave frequencies.K E Y W O R D S coplanar waveguide, high sensitivity, interdigital capacitor, permittivity extraction, symmetric sensor

Abstract. Up to now, sensor applications have rarely used materials whose dielectric properties are a function of the gas concentration. A sensor principle, by which this material effect can be utilized, is based planar radio-frequency sensors. For the first time, such a sensor was equipped with an integrated heater and successfully operated at temperatures up to 700 ∘C. This makes it possible to apply materials that show gas-dependent changes in the dielectric properties only at higher temperatures. By coating the planar resonance structure with a zeolite, ammonia could be detected. The amount of ammonia stored in the sensitive layer can thereby be determined, since the resonant frequency of the sensor shifts with its ammonia loading. Desorption measurements showed a dependence of the storage behavior of the ammonia in the gas-sensitive layer on the operating temperature of the sensor. Thus, it was possible that by operating the sensor at 300 ∘C, it only shows a gas-concentration-dependent signal. At lower operating temperatures, on the other hand, the sensor could possibly be used for dosimetric determination of very low ammonia concentrations.
