With the widespread population growth in cities, anthropogenic influences inevitably lead to natural disturbances. The metropolitan area of Istanbul, with its rapid urbanization rate, has faced intense pressure regarding the sustainability of urban habitats. In this context, landscapes comprising patches affected by various disturbances and undergoing temporal changes must be analyzed, in order to assess city-related disturbances. In this study, the main objective was to understand how urbanization changed the function of the spatial distribution of the urban mosaic and, more specifically, its relationship with the size, shape, and connection among land-use classes. For this purpose, we took Besiktas, a district of Istanbul, as the study area. We evaluated the landscape pattern of the urban environment in two stages. First, we used medium-resolution satellite imagery to reveal the general interactions in the urbanization process. Landscape- and class-level landscape metrics were selected to quantify the landscape connectivity, and the distances between classes (green areas and artificial surfaces), patterns, and processes, using five satellite images representing a time span of 51 years (1963, 1984, 1997, 2005, and 2014). The general landscape structure was examined by looking at the temporal–spatial processes of artificial surface and green areas obtained from these medium-resolution satellite images. The trends in selected landscape-level metrics were specified and discussed through the use of a moving window analysis. We then used Pleiades high-resolution satellite imagery (2015) to analyze the landscape structure in more detail. This high-resolution base image allows us to recognize the possibility of classifying basic cultural landscape classes. The findings regarding the spatial arrangement of each class in the areas allocated to 14 cultural landscape classes were interpreted by associating them with the landscape functions. Finally, particulate matter (PM10) concentration data were collected and evaluated as an ecological indicator, in order to reveal the relationships between landscape structure and landscape function. In short, we first evaluated the whole landscape structure using medium-resolution data, followed by the classification of cultural landscapes using high-resolution satellite imagery, providing a time-effective—and, therefore, essential—auxiliary method for landscape evaluation. This two-stage evaluation method enables inferences to be made that can shed light on the landscape functions in an urban environment based on the landscape structure.

Bodrum Peninsula is one of the most important tourism centers of Turkey with its geographical location, coastal and marine tourism, natural and cultural features. It has been determined that the winter population has also increased in Bodrum in recent years, and it is thought that this may cause an increasing permanent resident population and urbanization. The objective of this study is to determine the changes in land cover due to the rapid increase in urbanization in Bodrum Peninsula. For this purpose, object-based classification analysis was applied to Landsat 4-5 TM 1990, 2000, 2010 and Landsat 8 OLI 2021 multispectral satellite images. Within the scope of the analysis, the objects were created by applying the segmentation process to satellite images. Secondly, land cover classes were determined according to the Corine land cover classification with levels 1-2-3. Thirdly, the classification process based on a decision tree was carried out with the classes defined using the threshold values determined for spectral and texture properties of the objects using multiresolution segmentation. In the last stage, accuracy assessment analysis was applied to the classification results. According to the results, it is obtained that while Urban Fabric and Burnt Areas are increased in 32 years, Forest and semi-natural areas are decreased. As a result of population pressure due to tourism, Urban Fabric areas have moved closer to Forests and Semi-Natural Areas. Wildfires with the effect of heatwaves were increased, biodiversity has been endangered in the study area located in the Mediterranean basin, where human-related climate change is most clearly detected. Significantly, there has been a wildfire in Bodrum in August 2021, which lasted for days and caused severe degradation on the land cover. For this, sustainable land cover management is recommended to protect the natural ecosystem by minimizing the risks that cause land degradation in the Bodrum peninsula.

This study aims to investigate the impact of spatio-temporal dynamics of urban sprawl on habitats in Istanbul, using the CORINE 1990 and 2018 land cover datasets. In this context, by means of geographic information system (GIS) tools and techniques, land cover maps are created for land cover change analysis and visualization, the Shannon’s entropy method is performed for measuring urban growth and sprawl, and the landscape metrics method is applied for assessing habitat loss and fragmentation. Results indicate that the rate of urban sprawl in the area increased by 0.1230 as per the Shannon’s entropy index over the 28-year period. Similarly, the Shannon Diversity Index and the Shannon Evenness Index rose from 1.74 to 1.85 and from 0.68 to 0.70, respectively, indicating an increase in urbanization within the area. Moreover, an analysis of patch numbers reveals that habitat fragmentation increased in shrub and/or herbaceous vegetation associations (72.55%), heterogeneous agricultural areas (45.11%), arable lands (42.5%), forests (36.13%) and pastures (15.05%), due to urbanization. Habitat fragmentation has had a detrimental effect on the local biodiversity. While 15 flora species were identified as vulnerable, 13 as endangered and 9 as critically endangered, 19 fauna species were identified as vulnerable and 5 as endangered. This study highlights that the natural habitats and biodiversity of Istanbul will suffer further decline due to urbanization unless sustainable urban planning and management policies are put into practice. It is essential to have controlled urban development to preserve the ecosystem’s carrying capacity, and urbanization decisions must consider this requirement.
