High‐resolution in vivo imaging of human nailbed microvasculature by using photoacoustic microscopy

Abstract: Microcirculation imaging has significantly clinical value in early diagnosis and curative effect judgment of various diseases. The most superficial layer of the nailbed is rich in capillaries, which is suitable as a window on the microcirculation. However, few techniques can noninvasively observe the blood supply distribution of the nailbed, especially for high-resolution imaging of capillaries. In this study, we adapted an opticalresolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) to image the nailbed microvasculatu… Show more

“…Finally, the blood vessel tortuosity decreased in AD mice but steadily increased in WT mice (Figure 4G). The findings from this detection align with earlier studies through in vitro electron microscopy, suggesting that Aβ plaques adhere to and accumulates on the walls of meningeal <20 mJ/cm 2 (Li B. et al, 2023;Li D. et al, 2023).…”

“…This impact is assessed using transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) ( Russell and Bornstein, 2005 ; Gaudet et al, 2010 ; Gasparovic et al, 2013 ; Yan et al, 2022 ). Furthermore, the blood–brain barrier (BBB) in brain can be unfolded by exploiting the microbubble contrast agents during focused ultrasound imaging processes ( Li B. et al, 2023 ; Li D. et al, 2023 ). This mechanism allows for neuroimmune modulation and controlled drug release, presenting a promising therapeutic avenue for AD ( Silva et al, 2018 ).…”

“…More importantly, PAI is on the pathway for clinical translation into mainstream medicine [16] , [17] , with a variety of applications demonstrated in patients using the tomographic PAI geometry, with a substantial number of studies applying PAI for cancer visualisation, especially in breast cancer [18] , [19] , [20] , [21] . Recently, a wide range of potential further clinical applications have emerged, such as evaluation of skin microvasculature [22] , [23] , functional and endoscopic assessment of the gastrointestinal tract [24] , [25] , surgical guidance [26] , monitoring inflammation [27] , [28] , [29] and monitoring lymphadenopathies [30] / lymphedema [31] . These diverse applications demonstrate the future clinical potential for PAI underpinned by the versatile nature of the hardware implementations available.…”
