High-resolution 3D seismic imaging and refined velocity model building improve the image of a deep geothermal reservoir in the Upper Rhine Graben

Abstract: Over the past 35 years, geothermal projects have been developed in the Upper Rhine Graben (URG) to exploit deep geothermal energy. Underneath approximately 2 km of sedimentary deposits, the deep target consists of a granitic basement, which is highly fractured and hydrothermally altered. Therefore, it has high potential as a geothermal reservoir. Despite dense 2D seismic data coverage originally acquired for oil exploration (for a target two-way traveltime between 300 and 700 ms), the faults at the top of the … Show more

“…3D seismic is proving to be a very promising tool to strengthen the predictions of geothermal resources (Casini et al, 2010;Lüschen et al, 2011;Drouiller et al, 2019;Salaun et al, 2020).…”

“…Kent and Louie (2013) correlate azimuthal anisotropy to geothermal-resource potential using a 3D-3C seismic survey. Particularly, high-resolution 3D seismic imaging (Salaun et al, 2020) can reveal the distribution of fracture networks of a deep reservoir. Many researches show that comprehensive geophysical data can be used to describe geothermal reservoirs (e.g., Colwell et al, 2012;Patterson et al, 2017;Vasco et al, 2020) and reduce the risk of exploration (Guitton, 2020).…”

“…On the other hand, identifying the presence and location of smooth depressions and uplifts in a sedimentary basin's basement relief may assist in locating stratigraphic and structural oil traps [6,7]. In such research, potential field data on larger-scale surveys [8][9][10] and seismic data in more local target areas are used very effectively [11][12][13].…”
