Mapping of the Structural Lineaments and Sedimentary Basement Relief Using Gravity Data to Guide Mineral Exploration in the Denizli Basin

Fatma Figen Altinoğlu

Abstract: The Aegean Graben System is a complex tectonic structure in Western Anatolia and the Denizli Graben is a member of this system that hosts many geothermal springs, ore deposits, and travertine areas. In this study, the gravity data were analyzed to determine the subsurface geological structures and the depth model of the basin. The Bouguer gravity anomaly has a NW–SE pattern that is consistent with the general trend of the Denizli Basin. The pre-Neogene basement depths range from 0.1 km to 2.3 km. The Denizli B… Show more

“…Fault zones, folds, and other structural features can cause variations in the density of the rocks, leading to gravity anomalies. By analyzing the gravity data, geophysicists can infer the presence of these structures and map their orientations, extents, and relationships [95] . Gravity surveys provide valuable information about the structural framework and deformation history of the basement rocks.…”

“…By combining multiple datasets, geologists can refine interpretations, identify correlations between different data types, and create more detailed and reliable basement rock maps. Gravity surveys contribute significantly to basement rock mapping by detecting gravity anomalies, delineating geological structures, mapping basement contacts, identifying subsurface features, targeting mineral exploration, and integrating with other data sources [95] . These surveys provide valuable information about the density variations and gravitational field, helping geologists understand the subsurface geology, structural framework, and potential mineralization associated with basement rocks.…”

“…The third question is about mapping the structural lineaments (Ganguli and Pal; Sun et al) which is used widely in geological mapping (Altinoğlu, 2023;Ashraf and Filina, 2023;Bayou et al, 2023;Ibrahim et al, 2023;Lghoul et al, 2023;Mnasri et al, 2023;Qadir et al, 2023). Such applications are based on the qualitative interpretation of gravity anomalies in which the edge detection filters are usually applied to enhance the lineament.…”
