High prevalence of subacute thyroiditis during summer season in Italy

Abstract: Eighty consecutive patients with typical subacute thyroiditis were evaluated. Sex distribution showed a higher incidence in females (F/M 3.2/1), with a mean age of 44 yr. In the majority of patients (51/80 = 66%) the onset of the disease was between June and September (46% in July and August). The remaining cases were distributed in the other months without a clear monthly prevalence. These results indicate that the seasonal distribution of subacute thyroiditis is almost superimposable to that of established i… Show more

“…[5][6][7] It is a self limited disease thought to represent the response of the thyroid to systemic viral infection. [1][2][3][4] Clinically, the patients present with pain in the neck associated with tenderness of the gland, accompanied by malaise, weakness, fever, and an elevated ESR. [5][6][7] Depending on the phase of the disease, patients may be hyperthyroid, hypothyroid, or euthyroid.…”

“…But direct proof has yet to be found as most attempts to isolate the viruses or viral inclusion bodies in thyroid tissue of patients have resulted in failure [5,6]. Seasonal epidemics of subacute thyroiditis have been reported, and some enterovirus infections are suggested to be the cause of epidemics occurring in summer [7]. In our cases, we could not identify the viruses, but we think that the virus that infected the first twin might be different from the virus that infected the second twin because their symptoms developed in the spring of 1993 and the summer of 1995, respectively and because they were living in different places.…”

“…[5][6][17][18][19][20] The pathogenesis is unknown, but several viruses have been incriminated. [21][22][23] Currently, it is believed that SGT is not an autoimmune disorder. 5 In this series, a viral prodrome was recorded in 12 cases (33.33%).…”
