High prevalence of Phasi Charoen-like virus from wild-caught Aedes aegypti in Grenada, W.I. as revealed by metagenomic analysis

Abstract: Arboviruses cause diseases of significant global health concerns. Interactions between mosquitoes and their microbiota as well as the important role of this interaction in the mosquito's capacity to harbor and transmit pathogens have emerged as important fields of research. Aedes aegypti is one of the most abundant mosquitoes in many geographic locations, a vector capable of transmitting a number of arboviruses such as dengue and Zika. Currently, there are few studies on the metavirome of this mosquito particu… Show more

“…The dominant viruses in Aedes were described in previous publication [47]. Due to the limitations in the databases presently available, a large amount of reads for viruses from the metagenomic analysis remained un-classified, but for Culex, the Circoviridae (33.41% REA) family, particularly the genus Circovirus was the most dominant.…”

“…The main virus that colonizes Aedes aegypti in Grenada is the insect-specific virus belonging to the Phasivirus genus, Phasi charoen-like virus [47]. In Culex, a very large number of unclassified viruses exist.…”

“…More recently, high prevalence of a Phasi Charoen-like virus was reported in Ae. aegypti in Grenada 46 , suggesting a high diversity of unknown viruses are present in Caribbean populations of Ae. aegypti .…”

“…Aedes aegypti (L.) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Culicidae) are recognized vectors of yellow fever virus, dengue virus, chikungunya virus, and Zika virus, [48,49] as well as Mayaro virus, [50,51] Phasi Charoen‐like virus, [52] and many other pathogenic viruses [49,53] . Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) (Culicidae) is the vector of the parasitic nematode Wuchereria bancrofti (Cobbold) Seurat (Onchocercidae), the causative agent of lymphatic filariasis.…”
