High prevalence of Escherichia coli sequence type 131 among antimicrobial-resistant E. coli isolates from geriatric patients

Abstract: Previous work on the subclones within Escherichia coli ST131 predominantly involved isolates from Western countries. This study assessed the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance attributed to this clonal group. A total of 340 consecutive, non-duplicated urinary E. coli isolates originating from four clinical laboratories in Hong Kong in 2013 were tested. ST131 prevalence among the total isolates was 18.5 % (63/340) and was higher among inpatient isolates (23.0 %) than outpatient isolates (11.8 %, P,0.001), … Show more

“…A study from Egypt indicated that 75 % of clinical CTX-M-15-producing E. coli group B2 isolates belonged to clone ST131 (Fam et al, 2011). Recent studies also reported high prevalence rates of faecal E. coli ST131 among fluoroquinolone-resistant isolates in geriatric patients and residents of long-term care facilities (Burgess et al, 2015;Dahbi et al, 2014;Ho et al, 2015).…”

“…The inclusion criteria were (i) originating from an adult (aged 18 years or above) and (ii) showing significant growth at Ն10 5 CFU/ml. The patient demographics and antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolate collections have been reported previously (2,5,18,19). Animal isolates were obtained from an ongoing antimicrobial surveillance program between 2012 and 2013, during which 644 E. coli isolates were recovered from 347 animals, including 159 chickens (10 sampling dates), 111 pigs (32 sampling dates), and 77 cattle (10 sampling dates) (20,21).…”

“…Several recent guidelines have repositioned nitrofurantoin as a first-line antibiotic for the treatment of lower urinary tract infection (4). While the prevalence of nitrofurantoin resistance remained low, an exponential increase in the consumption of nitrofurantoin highlights the need to maintain vigilance in resistance surveillance (3,5,6).…”

“…E. coli ST131, most members of which exhibit serotype O25:H4 is a recently emerged, globally disseminated cause of multidrug‐resistant (MDR) extraintestinal infections . ST131 was first reported in 2008, based on isolates from nine countries that spanned three continents .…”
