High-Precision Cutting Tool Tracking With a Magnetic Bearing Spindle

Abstract: A method is presented for tool tracking in active magnetic bearing (AMB) spindle applications. The method uses control of the AMB air gap to achieve the desired tool position. The reference tracking problem is transformed from the tool coordinates into the AMB control axes by bearing deflection optimization. Therefore, tool tracking can be achieved by an off-the-shelf AMB controller. The method is demonstrated on a high-speed AMB boring spindle with a proportional integral derivative (PID) control. The hypothe… Show more

“…It has high power and simple control [19]- [21]. These motors can support the rotors without any physical contact and have torque which replace the contact components and reduces the overall size [22]. In these types of bearingless motors, the BPMSMs have attracted considerable interests due to the advantages of the small size and light weight, the high power factor and efficiency, and no need excitation current in the main winding.…”

“…Although the simulation results demonstrated that fuzzy logic control and sliding mode control did not perform better, the model was too simple to reflect the actual scenario and the control method was basic. Smirnov et al [16] and Pesch et al [17] studied magnetic bearing spindle tool tracking using PID and µ-synthesis control. They realized the tracking control of 30 um axial motion.…”

“…In addition to eliminating machining vibration, AMBs are also superior in the regulation of spindle position. A study of tool position control with the aid of AMBs during HSM was introduced by Smirnov et al [12]. An improvement in the determination of surface micro-topography characteristics has been reported by Kim et al [13].…”
