High‐precision alignment procedures for patterning processes in solar cell production

Abstract: We present two approaches for high‐accuracy aligning of patterning processes with each other when fabricating solar cells. We introduce the approaches on the example of two different patterning processes of which one is adjustable (laser process) and one is not adjustable (screen‐printing process). The basic idea is to measure the coordinates of the applied structures of each involved patterning process at discrete grid points with respect to a reference coordinate system. We chose the grid points such that th… Show more

“…All the patterning steps were carried out using a 1064 nm NIR-laser source with a fiducial-based alignment system for high precision scribing. [26,27] In general, P1 and P3 scribe with residual electrode will result in electrical shunts. Likewise, P2 scribe with improper removal of the functional layers or with any damage to the IO:H electrode can increase the series resistance in the mini-module.…”

“…The potential of this alignment procedure has already been demonstrated in [11] and [12], where we last reported on the successful alignment of 40-μm-wide screen-printed metal contacts to 70-μm-wide laser-doped lines. In [14], we introduced the alignment procedure by providing detailed insight into its principle. In this article, we point out potential error sources, and we name the Fig.…”
