High Power RF Test Facility at the SNS

Abstract: RF Test Facility (RFTF) has been constructed to support present and future needs in testing, processing and conditioning of various high power RF components of normal conducting and superconducting systems at the SNS. The facility is expected to have additional subsystems that are needed for complete superconducting RF (SRF) testing and processing. A full capacity high voltage converter modulator (HVCM) with 11 MW peak power at 8% duty cycle has been installed for driving one or two klystron RF amplifiers. Th… Show more

“…The cryogenic system is designed for 2.4 kW of power at 2.1 o K, which ensures a comfortable margin of operation over the static and dynamic losses of all the cavities in the present configuration [14], and also for a possible machine power upgrade which would include an additional 36 high-beta cavities (9 cryomodules). Each of the 81 superconducting cavities is powered by a pulsed 550 kW klystron via a power coupler [15], [16].…”

“…From April 2004, the bake and RF test stands had to be moved, re-commissioned and used at SNS -Oak Ridge (Figure 2) [7]. With the two couplers assembled in the test stand, the RF power delivered by the klystron is transferred from the input coupler to the output coupler via the connecting waveguide and dumped into a water load rated for 600kW peak power at 8 % duty factor or to a variable short circuit.…”
