Abstract: The present findings showed for the first time an association between DEHP plasma concentrations and endometriosis, suggesting a possible role for phthalate esters in the pathogenesis.

“…49 Because of differences in study design, patient selection and assay methods, conflicting results were observed between endometriosis and PHAH exposure. Our study protocol was well designed compared with the previous studies of Cobellis et al 50 First, in our study, the patient population was very well defined: we had used two control groups, wherein Cobellis et al 50 had analysed a single control group. Second, our study offers a unique combination of measurement of six PEs mix compared with previous study in which single compound DEHP and its metabolite mono-ethyl hexyl phthalate (MEHP) were measured.…”

“…Data on reproductive effects of phthalates in women are relatively scarce (Jung Koo and Mu Lee, 2005). A case control study demonstrated an association between endometriosis and elevated concentrations of plasma DEHP (Cobellis et al, 2003). Another study demonstrated an association between the concentrations of DEHP and MEHP in cord blood and shortened gestation age .…”

“…Subtle effects on hormonal balance, sperm production and sperm motility in men, as those observed in human studies, could influence fertility. In women, phthalates have also been associated with endometriosis, which can be a cause of infertility (Cobellis et al, 2003). The existing data from human studies, however, is far from conclusive (Duty et al, 2005b;Hauser et al, 2005;Modigh et al, 2002;Rozati et al, 2002).…”
