High-Performance OTFTs Using Surface-Modified Alumina Dielectrics

Abstract: We show novel and selective means to modify the dielectric surfaces in organic TFTs. Modification schemes include alkylphosphonic acid monolayers that have a strong affinity for alumina surfaces. Monolayers form robust, extremely uniform thin films and are deposited through simple spin-coating with a dilute solution of the monolayer precursor in solvent. Adding monolayers to organic TFTs has resulted in polycrystalline devices with mobilities nearly equal to single-crystal values while maintaining acceptable v… Show more

“…1,2 Among many organic semiconductors investigated, pentacene has been shown to possess the highest mobility in thin-film states, and the mobility is favorably compared with that of hydrogenated amorphous silicon. [3][4][5] Most materials with high mobility in thin-film state such as pentacene and thiophene derivatives are p-type semiconductor whose main carrier is hole. [6][7][8] However, there have been few reports on high performance n-type organic TFTs.…”

“…The purity of the materials, the quality of source and drain contacts as well as the temperature have significant influence on the device performance [7] . Up to now, pentacene is the most ideal material for organic field-effect transistors, the highest performance of pentacene based OFET were reported by 3M cooperation with mobility up to 3.3 cm 2 /V s and on/off ratio exceeded 10 6 by depositing pentacene films on the alumina substrate with phosphonohexadecane SAM layers [8] , further investigations for the RFID tags were also taken based on this material [9] .…”

“…Over the past decade significant research has been done and the search for the new π-conjugated systems has been ongoing because of the important, rapidly growing number of applications in electronic devices such as semiconducting materials [2][3][4][5], organic solar cells [6], sensors [7], organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), and flexible displays. π-conjugated materials have been extensively studied for their optoelectronic properties due to the offering of low-cost, large-area, and flexible electronic devices [8][9][10]. S-shaped dibenzo[c,l]chrysene derivatives are regarded as a hexacyclic polyaromatic hydrocarbon compound containing two cove-regions, and they have potential applications in biological systems and organic semiconductor materials [11,12].…”
